I'm becoming more perplexed about the Terminal problems I was having. I tried doing the same thing on a co-worker's MacBook, also running Leopard, that was causing me headaches. Everything worked fine.

Maybe something about my installation didn't go right. Maybe some configuration from my old Tiger Terminal.app conflicted with the new app. Maybe it's a PowerPC-specific problem. I'm not sure, and right now my Powerbook is back on Tiger until I get new EVDO software from Verizon. I'll try again then.

I too was pretty astonished by the sheer retardation of the keybindings for terminal tabs myself. I'll stick with multiple windows since that is doable with human hands on a keyboard. Should work like Firefox. cmd+number is tabs, cmd+tilda is windows. But mac tries so hard to be different, it ends up making things harder to use.

FYI: you can set the tabs to always show by selecting “Show Tab Bar” from the View menu.
