Drafting the Dissertation

I'm drafting the dissertation. I've been doing that, sort of, since January. But now the actual draft is starting to take shape. It's exciting. It's scary. It's mind-numbing. This is definitely the least fun part of the whole process.

In just over a month I will pack up my little family and move to silicon valley and start work at Facebook. I hope to have finished my final draft by then, or at least my first draft for my advisor. I'll probably fly back and defend sometime in the fall semester. Or, I won't get as far as I hope and I'll be an ABD working full-time writing 15 minutes a day until I finish…

Ok, so it hardly matters that it's the last update of the year if you only update it once every several months...

I hope to update more frequently from here on out. But that's why you have RSS, isn't it?

Proespectus and Data

The prospectus is complete. Now I finally have figured out what to say when people ask "what is your research?", and have a document to prove it. I present (defend? argue?) my prospectus to my committee on Tuesday.

I've changed my mind slightly on what data I will be recording, and so if you are planning to record your organ for me don't do it quite yet. More information forthcoming.

Today was the prospectus meeting where I convinced my committee that I know what I'm doing and that they should turn me loose to fall on my face. :-) The slides are available for download.
